When should the flag be displayed?

State and local authorities and legal persons in public law display the flag on flag days. Residential, business and office buildings have a flag-display obligation on 24 February, 23 June and 20 August. On other flag days, private display is voluntary and encouraged. Polling-station buildings also display the flag on election day.

Raising and lowering

Raise the flag at sunrise, no later than 08:00. Lower it at sunset, no later than 22:00. Keep it raised over Midsummer night. Permanently raised flags are illuminated after dark. A specific government declaration can set different hours.

Mourning display

On 14 June and declared national mourning days, display the flag in mourning: attach a black ribbon at the top of a flagstaff or fly it at half-mast. Follow the official guidance for handling the flag.

A flag day is not automatically a day off

Public holidays are labelled separately using the dashboard’s Estonian holiday calendar. A flag day alone does not make a weekday a public holiday.

Recurring dates project the current Flag Act. Verified election and exceptional dates are added individually; unannounced events and later government declarations may be absent. The next general/youth song-and-dance festival is scheduled for 2028; no festival dates are assumed here.

How it works

Fixed and movable flag days follow the Estonian Flag Act. Mother's Day, Grandparents Day, Kindred Peoples Day and Father's Day are calculated for the chosen year. Public holidays and flag days are different concepts and are labelled separately.

Assumptions and limits

State and local authorities and legal persons in public law have flag-day duties. Residential, business and office buildings must display the flag on 24 February, 23 June and 20 August; ordinary private participation on other flag days is voluntary. Election dates and exceptional occasions are included only when officially verified; later declarations may add dates.
