How it works
The calculator multiplies the starting amount by the ratio of the two monthly price index levels. Add the actual salary for the comparison month to see how your purchasing power changed.
Assumptions and limits
Statistics Estonia’s all-items index measures average consumer price changes in Estonia. Your own spending pattern can differ.
Guide and examplesHow inflation changes salary purchasing power
Inflation is a rise in the average price level. Purchasing power describes how much your money can buy: when prices rise faster than your pay, the same salary buys less.
- Choose two published months and enter a starting salary in euros or Estonian kroons. Kroons are converted at €1 = 15.6466 EEK; the comparison amount is shown in euros.
- The equivalent salary equals the starting amount multiplied by the comparison month’s CPI divided by the starting month’s CPI. The data uses Statistics Estonia’s all-items consumer price index, table IA002.
- Optionally enter actual pay in the comparison month to see the change in purchasing power. Compare net pay with net pay, or gross pay with gross pay.
Illustration: prices rise by 10%
If an illustrative price index rises from 100 to 110, a €1,500 salary needs to rise to €1,650 to buy the same average basket. A €1,600 salary would be higher in euros but have about 3.03% less purchasing power. These are example index levels, not observations for particular months. The national basket may differ from your spending; this tool uses published data and does not forecast inflation or calculate taxes.
