Forecast times and source

NOAA’s 0–100 OVATION value describes the aurora overhead at a one-degree grid point. Aurora can also appear on the northern horizon. Darkness and clouds affect what you can see. This short-range forecast applies to its stated time.

How it works

The outlook uses the NOAA OVATION grid point nearest the selected place. The observation and forecast times show how far ahead the model looks.

Assumptions and limits

The model describes aurora activity overhead. Clouds, light pollution and a clear view to the north also affect what you can see.

Guide and examplesRead the aurora outlook alongside darkness and clouds

  1. Choose a listed Estonian city or the saved Estonian location from the weather widget. The nearest NOAA OVATION grid point provides the model signal.
  2. Check the observation, forecast and retrieval times. The forecast applies to its stated time; a passed forecast or delayed refresh is labelled in the view.
  3. Compare the model with sky darkness at the forecast time and the separately timestamped current cloud cover from OpenWeather, when available.

Why a model signal does not guarantee a sighting

NOAA’s 0–100 OVATION value describes aurora overhead at a one-degree grid point. It is not your probability of seeing the northern lights. Aurora may be visible on the northern horizon, while cloud, daylight and local light pollution can hide it. Current cloud observations and the short-range aurora forecast refer to different times; check both timestamps before planning a visit.
